I attended San Jacinto College’s Spring 2026 Commencement at Grace Church in Houston. Sitting among faculty, staff, and community leaders, I watched hundreds of students cross the stage. These are students who persisted, overcame obstacles, balanced work and family, and finished strong. Moments like these remind me why community colleges are among the most powerful engines of opportunity, access, and social mobility in our region.
San Jacinto College’s mission to change lives through education, community engagement, and partnerships was alive in every cheer, every handshake, and every family celebrating in the audience. As each graduate walked across the stage, I could not help but think about the leadership journeys they are stepping into. These journeys will unfold in a world increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence, rapid change, and new expectations for how we learn and work.
As an educator and higher education leader, my commitment has always been to help institutions prepare students not only for today’s workforce but for the future they will inherit. My research focuses on how leaders perceive, adopt, and apply artificial intelligence in organizational practice, and commencement is a powerful reminder of why this work matters. These graduates are entering a landscape where artificial intelligence will influence how they communicate, collaborate, solve problems, and lead. Our responsibility is to ensure they are prepared with both the technical fluency and the human judgment required to thrive.
This is the heart of my work, whether I am conducting research, speaking at conferences, or writing. In A New Era of Leadership with AI, I explore how artificial intelligence is reshaping leadership itself, including how it changes decision-making, strategy, and the expectations placed on leaders across industries. In Teaching and Leading with Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education, I offer a practical, ethics-first framework for integrating artificial intelligence into teaching, learning, governance, and policy without losing sight of the human connection at the core of education.
Commencement is a celebration of achievement, but it is also a call to action for those of us who lead in higher education. We must continue building pathways that support student success, strengthen equity, and prepare learners for an artificial intelligence-enabled future. We must design institutions that are ready, not reactive, and leaders who can navigate complexity with clarity, integrity, and purpose.
To all the new San Jac graduates, congratulations. You have already demonstrated resilience, discipline, and leadership. This moment is not the end of your journey. It is the beginning of the impact you will make in your communities, workplaces, and the world ahead.
